Exam day behaviour and what to take with

On the day of the exam, try to arrive at the exam hall at least 30 to 60 minutes before the 09:00 start time. This gives you ample time to find your seat, settle down, calm your nerves, and go to the bathroom before the invigilators start giving out the papers. There is nothing worse than rushing in last minute, feeling flustered.

Once you are in the hall, remember to be respectful and follow all instructions from the invigilators. No talking, no peeking, no funny business. Your focus should be entirely on your paper. And please, switch off your cell phone completely and place it in your bag, or wherever the invigilators instruct. Don’t even have it in your pocket, okay?

Here is a list of important things you absolutely must take with you for your English HL P2 exam:

  • Your official South African ID document or your birth certificate. No ID, no exam, simple as that.
  • Your statement of entry or exam admission letter. This confirms your details and seat number.
  • At least two to three good quality black or blue pens. Make sure they are not dried out.
  • A transparent pencil case. Invigilators need to see what is inside, no secrets.
  • A ruler. Sometimes it is useful for underlining or neatening things up.
  • A small bottle of water (label removed) to keep hydrated, especially if it is a long paper.
  • Some tissues, just in case.

Remember, no dictionaries are allowed for English Home Language exams, so don’t even think about it. Leave your notes, textbooks, and any electronic gadgets (apart from your switched-off phone) outside the exam room or in your bag where instructed.

Keep pushing

You have worked hard to get to this point, so trust in your preparation. Stay calm, read your questions carefully, and plan your answers well. You have got this, future matriculants!
