Purpose of Role

This role exists to manage and optimise the school’s creditors, VAT, reconciliations and financial controls. It supports accurate reporting, budgeting and cash flow forecasting, while leading a small team and promoting best practice across the finance function.

Key Responsibilities

Accounts Payable & Payments

  • Own and control the full Creditors (Accounts Payable) function, ensuring timely and accurate supplier payments.
  • Execute daily payment releases and maintain precise records.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Prepare and submit VAT returns in line with statutory requirements.
  • Manage supplier and bank reconciliations; oversee stock counts and valuations.
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and monitor budgets; compile audit packs and maintain the general ledger and fixed asset register.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Staff supervision and process improvement; collaborate with colleagues to promote excellence in the finance team.
  • Communicate effectively and build relationships at all levels; promote diversity and inclusion.
  • Incorporate the ethos and values of the School into all aspects of the role; undertake general administration as required.

Operational Excellence

  • Assist with month-end/quarter-end processes and ensure accurate reporting for management and audits.
  • Support financial planning, budgeting and related ad-hoc analysis as needed.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • BCom Accounting with 3 years’ relevant experience, or a relevant qualification with 8 years senior bookkeeping experience.

Experience

  • Proven accounting/bookkeeping experience, preferably in a school or educational setting, is highly advantageous.

Competencies

  • Strong VAT & SARS compliance knowledge; strong accounts payable skills.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and MS Office; advanced Excel skills essential.
  • Excellent organisational/analytical ability with high attention to detail.
  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and lead a small team.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to cultural and individual differences; possesses requisite clearance certificates.
