Purpose of Role
The School Matron supports learner wellbeing, provides basic healthcare, oversees Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), and assists with general school administrative duties. This role is essential for maintaining a safe, healthy, and caring school environment.
Key Responsibilities
Medical & First Aid Support
- Provide advanced first aid (Level 3) care to learners and staff during the school day
- Respond to minor injuries, illnesses, and medical emergencies on-site
- Maintain accurate incident and treatment records
- Ensure appropriate referral to medical professionals where necessary
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding learner health concerns when required
Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)
- Assist with implementation and monitoring of school OHS policies and procedures
- Identify, report, and follow up on hazards and safety risks within the school environment
- Support emergency preparedness, including evacuation drills and safety compliance
- Promote a safe, clean, and health-conscious school environment
General Matron Duties
- Provide daily care and general wellbeing support to learners
- Attend to minor illnesses, comfort, and basic care needs during the school day
- Assist learners with basic health and hygiene guidance where appropriate
- Supervise the sick bay/medical room when required
- Maintain a caring, calm, and supportive presence within the school environment
Administrative & Support Duties
- Manage the school’s lost property system
- Oversee the second-hand uniform shop, including stock control, sales, and record keeping
- Assist with general administrative duties and school operational support as required
- Maintain accurate records related to first aid, stock, and incidents
Minimum Requirements
- Relevant medical or healthcare qualification (e.g., Enrolled Nurse or equivalent)
- Valid First Aid Level 3 certificate (essential)
- Experience in a school, clinic, or caregiving environment (advantageous)
- Basic knowledge of OHS principles and procedures
- Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
