Purpose of Role

The Head of Department for Special Needs leads the academic and operational functions of the special needs phase. The role combines leadership with teaching responsibilities, curriculum oversight, and staff development to secure the educational welfare and progress of learners with special needs.


Key Responsibilities

Academic Leadership

  • Oversee the effective academic functioning of the special needs phase.
  • Coordinate evaluation/assessment, homework, and written projects for all subjects within the special needs phase.
  • Plan, assess, and record learner attainment; conduct book control for Special Needs classes.

Teaching & Curriculum

  • Act as a class teacher as required by appointment, actively engaging in classroom teaching.
  • Ensure school policies are implemented and upheld within the department.
  • Assist with planning, management, and procurement of textbooks and resources for the department.

Coordination & Support

  • Coordinate and manage teaching assistants; provide guidance to inexperienced staff on classroom strategies and behaviour management.
  • Provide guidance and support to fellow teachers to ensure learner welfare and departmental development.
  • Coordinate outings for Special Needs students.

Communication & Compliance

  • Communicate regularly with parents in person, by email, or by telephone.
  • Oversee and ensure implementation of school policies within the department.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Recognised Degree and/or a 4-year Professional Teaching Qualification

Experience

  • Experience working with CAPS and the curriculum.
  • Fully bilingual – English and Afrikaans.

Competencies

  • Full SACE registration is mandatory.
  • Excellent communication and administrative skills.
  • Experience with modern technology and full computer literacy.
