 St Charles College, founded in 1875, is an independent Christian boys’ College situated in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, catering for day boys from Grade 000 to Matric with boarders from Grade 4 upwards. The College has written the University of Cambridge IGCSE, AS Level and A Level Examinations since 2002.

Head of Basketball

We are looking for an authentic leader in the field who will mentor young men of calibre through sport. The right person will have a unique capacity to inspire boys and coaches through an exceptional work ethic, skill set and passion for basketball. If you are able to work in a team-focused environment within an independent all-boys school, and are aligned with the values of our College, this position offers an opportunity to genuinely influence the lives of generations of boys of the College.

The ideal candidate will:

• Work with the First Team Coach to maintain, adjust, and implement the general gameplay patterns on the basketball court.
• Prepare fixtures, venues, referees and support staff regarding game day fixtures against other schools.
• Together with the Director of Sport, arrange all aspects relating to attending/participating in tournaments.
• Arrange, build and develop our own basketball tournament.
• Train coaches, referees and table officials as needed.
• Find suitable coaches to work within the basketball programme.
• Ensure that the indoor facility, outdoor courts, balls, and equipment are well-maintained.
• Work with players, together with the Sports Science and Strength and Conditioning team, to ensure that our players are well-conditioned to compete at the highest level.
• Arrange, coordinate and facilitate, with other coaches in the area, to select regional and provincial teams.
• Plan and control the basketball budget.
• Focus on basketball skills and assist in sports development as a Physical Education teacher.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

• Relevant Tertiary Qualification.
• Relevant Basketball Coaching Course qualifications.
• At least 2 to 5 years of experience in the same or similar position.
• High-performance experience will be essential.
• Ability to teach in the senior school and/or strength and conditioning experience would be an added advantage.
