HOD Position/Educator (Foundation Phase)

Tomorrow’s People College is a well-established private school in Faerie Glen, Pretoria. The school has a position available to appoint a committed HOD/educator to fill the full-time position, from 1 January 2026.

1.THE AIM OF THIS POSITION

  • to engage in class teaching
  • be responsible for the effective functioning of the department
  • to ensure that the subject, learning area, or phase is promoted correctly.

2.CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB

The duties and responsibilities of the job are individual and varied, depending on the approaches and needs of the school, and include, but are not limited to, the following:

Teaching

  • Teach assigned classes and assess learner progress.
  • Ensure teaching maximizes learning and supports departmental goals.

Extra and Co-Curricular

  • Oversee the department and enforce school policies.
  • Compile a termly Assessment Planner and guide staff on teaching methods and curriculum implementation.

Control and Supervision

  • Monitor educators’ and learners’ work.
  • Check departmental reports, mark sheets, and assessments.
  • Oversee administrative responsibilities and ensure moderation of tests and exams.

General Administration

  • Assist with managing departmental resources, timetables, rosters, and welfare matters.
  • Support effective school management and policy development.

Communication

  • Foster collaboration among staff and maintain high teaching standards and administrative efficiency.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure proper use and safekeeping of school assets.
  • Confirm that all learners have the required learning materials.
  • Support the punctuality and attendance of staff and learners.

Staff Appraisal and Development

  • Support appraisal processes, conduct lesson observations, and organize development programs.
  • Mentor, coach, and train new or inexperienced educators.
  • Facilitate ongoing professional growth and address performance gaps.

Departmental Meetings

  • Weekly departmental meetings.
  • Discuss planning, assessment, learner progress, remedial work, and textbook procedures.

Areas for Development

  • Guide educators in lesson planning, assessment, and learner support.
  • Monitor learners’ written work and ensure assessment standards are consistent.
  • Implement remedial programs where needed.

Class Visits and Mentorship

  • Conduct class visits to identify development needs and improve teaching methods.
  • Provide mentorship on subject content, teaching strategies, and learner welfare.

3.THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MUST HAVE:

Professional requirements:

  • The appropriate teaching qualification
  • Registration with SACE and in good standing.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of teaching experience
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Fully computer literate
  • No criminal offences

Curriculum and Phase Expertise:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the Foundation Phase and/or Intermediate Phase
  • Experience in curriculum planning, assessment, and moderation with a phase or subject area

Leadership and Management Experience:

  • Experience in leading or coordinating a subject, grade, or phase team
  • Evidence of involvement in school committees or staff mentoring
