PRESIDENTIAL YOUTH EMPLOYMENT INITIATIVE (PYEI) IN THE BASIC EDUCATION SECTOR RECRUITMENT GUIDELINE PHASE IV

The Phase 4 of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) is now open again. The Department of Basic Education is again looking for young people to support and assist schools in their areas. From Wednesday, 1 February 2023 marks the beginning of the academic year and provides an opportunity for the youth to be in schools at a critical time and period when they are needed.

The previous Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) Phase 1, 2 up to 3, The Department of Basic Education provided 850 000 job opportunities for youths nationally. So this time the space is limited to 255 000 job opportunities and will be a split of two batches or cohort of 150 000 (first batch), and then a batch of 105 000 youths.

When will the first batch of Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) start?

The first cohort starting on 1 February 2023 with the second cohort of 105 000 starting on 1 May 2023; however, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape will appoint single cohorts each, starting on 1 March and 1 February 2023, respectively.

Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) per province

  • Eastern Cape Province will only take 40 100 young people, at which on the first batch starting 1 May 2023.
  • Free State Province will only take 15 500 young people for Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) starting on the 1st of May 2023.
  • Gauteng Province will give 40 000 youth the job opportunity for Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) starting from 1 May 2023.
  • KZN (Kwa-Zulu Natal) will consider giving 59 500 Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) job opportunities as of 1 May 2023.
  • Limpopo Province will make sure that 35 000 youth benefit from the Phase 4 of Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI).
  • Mpumalanga Province will take 22 000 young people to various schools for Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI)
  • Northern Cape Province has a space of only 7 000 young people to benefit from Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI)
  • North West Province has to make sure that 16 000 young people benefit for the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI)
  • Western Cape has 21 000 spaces to place youth for Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) job opportunity.

The PYEI-BEEI leverages on the fact that there is a public school in every community in South Africa, which makes it possible for government to provide job opportunities to the most vulnerable youth, who under normal circumstance might have to leave their communities to access opportunities far from home.

How much is Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) phase 4 stipend?

The Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) phase 4 salary or stipend have change from previous amount, the phase 4 will earn a gross of R4081.44 per month, that is before deductions. Only less than 1% UIF contribution will be deduction from your monthly sallary.

Whats are Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) phase 4 requirements of employment?

  1. Youth at age 18 – 34 years (18 or above when applying, or 34 turning 35 on or before 31 March 2024)
  2. Youth residing 5 km around the location of the school (30 km for farm and rural schools)
  3. One opportunity per household
  4. Meet requirements per category and sub-category applied for
  5. Youth, NOT in Education, NOT in Employment, NOT in Training (NEET)
  6. Youth NOT studying distance, online, part-time, full-time
  7. Youth NOT receiving government grants for self (e.g., NSFAS, Funza Lushaka, SASSA grants such as SRD 350)
  8. Youth NOT receiving any other form of STIPEND, WAGE or SALARY
  9. Youth NOT in a Learnership
  10. Youth not in another programme of the Department of Education (e.g. EPWP, CWP, Learner Suppor Agents, Care and Support Agents, Food Handler, Bus Controllers, Screeners, etc.)
  11. Youth WITHOUT criminal record/s
  12. Youth that did not participate in all three phases (Phase I, II, III)
  13. Youth that was not unfairly advantaged above others due to their relations to staff members (SMT or SGB)
  14. Youth living with disability must provide medical certificate confirming the nature of disability
  15. Youth that have a valid South African Identity Book/Card or valid Passport and work permit
