The Sustainability Institute is seeking a Teacher / Montessori Guide (3–6 years) to join our Lynedoch Children’s House team in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This is a full-time role reporting to the LCH/LCS Programme Coordinator. Purpose of Role
The 3–6 Montessori Guide at Lynedoch Children’s House provides a safe, nurturing and prepared space for very young children. The role models positive practice, attends to each child’s individual needs, conducts observations, plans lessons and implements activities aligned to wellbeing and development. Ongoing professional development is expected to keep knowledge and skills refreshed.
Key Responsibilities
Environment
- Prepare and maintain a high-quality educational environment for each child
- Uphold a 3-hour work cycle to support learning through exploration at the child’s own pace
- Deliver daily presentations tailored to each child’s needs
- Keep the environment neat, beautiful and welcoming
Record Keeping & Observations
- Track and document children’s progress efficiently and consistently
- Conduct daily observations
- Participate in regular team meetings about children’s needs and progress
- Prepare progress reports twice a year
- Complete all admin related to children, including attendance and reporting
General
- Maintain strong communication with team members and the coordinator
- Foster positive relationships with parents and share updates on progress and news
- Meet with parents as needed
- Role model a friendly, neat and professional presence to visitors and partners
- Represent LCH/SI professionally during tours and engagements
- Attend staff development, conferences, meetings and workshops
- Contribute to ideas, planning and delivery of parent meetings, workshops, fundraising and outings
Non-core Responsibilities
- Help keep SI surroundings free of litter
- Attend staff meetings as necessary
- Host students as part of ilima when required
Minimum Requirements
Education
- AMI Montessori Certificate and/or Diploma in 3–6 years
- NQF Level 4/5 ECD
- First Aid Level 1 (Paediatric)
Experience
- Experience with children in an educational setting
Competencies
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency in two of the following languages: Afrikaans, English and/or isiXhosa
- Calm, nurturing personality with a love for children
- Flexibility and stamina to be on their feet for long periods
- Passionate, adaptable, creative, trustworthy and professional
- Present, supportive and a positive role model
