We seek an energetic, dedicated and professional Physical Education specialist with a passion for swimming, water polo, and the holistic development of learners. This role combines sport administration, coaching, and teaching within a supportive environment that values growth and collaboration.

Purpose of Role

The role exists to lead and grow the aquatics programme and to teach Physical Education at the high school level. The successful candidate will coach swimming and water polo, manage fixtures and athlete development, and deliver engaging PE lessons aligned with curriculum objectives.


Key Responsibilities

Coaching & Development

  • Deliver high‑quality coaching in swimming and water polo, ensuring technical development and progression.
  • Apply long‑term athlete development principles and age‑appropriate training methodologies.
  • Monitor, assess and record learner performance, attendance and participation in aquatics activities and competitions.
  • Provide regular, constructive feedback to learners and parents.

Teaching & Academic Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare developmentally appropriate Physical Education lessons aligned with curriculum objectives.
  • Supervise PE lessons, ensuring a safe and structured learning environment.
  • Coach and manage school sports teams, including practices, team selection and match preparation.
  • Evaluate and report on learner performance and development throughout the year.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learner needs and abilities.
  • Maintain records of learner progress and assessments; submit detailed progress reports.
  • Ensure constant supervision of learners during all activities and provide honest feedback to parents.
  • Encourage positive social behaviour through structured activities and role modelling.
  • Perform administrative duties, including meetings, school functions and committee work.

Planning, Coordination & Communications

  • Prepare fixture lists before each season in consultation with the Head of Sport.
  • Communicate fixture schedules to coaches, learners and stakeholders.
  • Allocate staff and coaches to teams and activities; ensure practice and match details are clear.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date sports notice boards, including colours criteria.
  • Communicate results and achievements at assemblies; support school marketing materials as required.
  • Provide regular updates to the Head of Sport on programme progress and challenges.

Operations & Administration

  • Collect and verify timesheets/invoices from external coaches and submit for processing.
  • Keep accurate records of team and learner performance, attendance and achievements for awards.
  • Maintain sports equipment and report maintenance needs; record incidents and injuries per procedures.
  • Be aware of high‑risk learners and take appropriate precautions; participate in professional development.
  • Prepare substitute plans to ensure continuity of teaching and coaching; collaborate with other departments.

Minimum Requirements

Education & Qualifications

  • Valid coaching accreditation with Swimming South Africa (SSA), appropriate to the level coached.
  • Additional water polo coaching certification (e.g. World Aquatics or SSA‑affiliated programmes) advantageous.
  • Open water swimming accreditation or proven open water safety and event management experience.
  • Valid Lifeguard Certification from a recognised authority (e.g. Lifesaving South Africa).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (mandatory).
  • Knowledge of water safety protocols, supervision ratios and emergency action plans for pool and open water.
  • Relevant qualification in Sport Management/Administration.
  • SACE registration.

Coaching Development

  • Deliver development-focused coaching in swimming and water polo; monitor progress and development.
  • Apply evidence‑based training methods and track learner performance and participation.
  • Provide constructive feedback to learners and parents.
